Emotion Color is an experimental project for users to simply track their emotion status in a visual way. At the same time, for myself to explore the relationship between emotion and color,  the capability of color for carrying information, and the connection between mental experience and visual assets.

simple. fast. instinctive. private. visual

project background

Originally responding to an open project with the concept of ‘land’ in design studio class, I developed two ideas to explore the meaning of ‘land’. The first idea was more refer to physical land when the second one, Emotion color, was about people’s mental ‘land’. I started from 3 important factors related to ‘land’ which are places, time and people in the first idea, finally developed the concept into the study of emotion visualization.

target users

current users   people who care about their emotion status
advanced users  people who have mental illness and need to track their mental status

design process

'Output(web)' sketches (low-fidelity prototypes tested through invision)

'Input(mobile app)' sketches (low-fidelity prototypes tested through invision)

Test the idea by documenting my own emotion color in different ways (as single color, as a set, with audio, with caption…), to see how it works, where it goes, and what it will bring.

‘intuit’  is a fast and simple action to take without any overthinking. It works like a color flipbook letting you to stop at any page which can represent your current feeling.

‘select’ is for people who know what color they want to use and prefer to choose it manually. Swipe left-right to change the hue, up-down to change the tint/shade.

‘scan’ is a speculative feature, by which you can scan your finger and get a color from analyzation (temperature, heart beat, preference history….), the result will be consistent, accurate, objective, reasonable, and based on science. I’m exploring more possibilities when design meets future technology.

By each way you will have a color goes with automatically location/weather information (which are important factors affecting the emotion) on record. You can have multiple colors as a set when you use 'intuit' or 'select' feature, and you can choose to record the audio information when scanning.

Color is arbitrary and fluid, it has different meanings to individuals. Even for the same person the consistency of understanding and feeling the color still can’t be guaranteed. But just like the emotion, it’s a flow. This is an experimental project, I still have a lot to study. Eventually I hope this app could function in art therapy field, and work as a tool to improve people’s mental health.
